Is CBD the Future of Cosmetics?

CBD Oil

There are several brands that use cannabidiol in cosmetics or offer the oil, such as Babor, Chi Natural Life, and Absolution. Cannabidiol was already seen as a new hype/trend last year. CBD is the promise in skin care.

They, therefore, thought it was high time to open their own high-end brand store in the Netherlands, in the 9 Streets in Amsterdam, with all their CBD health and beauty products. But what exactly does CBD do for our skin?

“CBD is a 100% natural product and provides a calming and purifying effect for many people, both when applied to the skin and when ingested. For example, after taking drops of CBD you can experience relief from pain and stress and in many cases, you get calmer skin. Its use in cosmetic products is therefore perfect for sensitive skin or people with skin problems that cause inflammation or irritation,” says Cibdol.

The Swiss brand Cibdol says about their products: “For the purest CBD oil, you have to go to Cibdol. We are manufacturer of Swiss purity. From the best European hemp, we make natural oil that is silky soft, and gold and we keep the production process as transparent as possible. These productions, analyses, and examinations take place in Swiss laboratories, where all impurities have been removed from the oil by means of a patented filtering process.

In this way, we know how to develop a 100% natural and high-quality full-spectrum CBD oil for our customers. Through our store, we also hope to contribute to the image of CBD in supplements and cosmetics.”

In mid-2019, we noticed the trend ‘cannabidiol in cosmetics already’. An extensive article was written in Vakmagazine De Beauty Professional. Below you will find some of that, but now there is also a European quality mark for CBD rigged.

The background of CBD

We see ampoules with hemp seed oil in the professional cosmetics industry or balms with cannabidiol (CBD). Why is it the trend to add hemp seed oil or cannabidiol? Does it get customers high? And what is the effect of CBD on cosmetics for the skin?

By cannabis, we mean hashish and weed. These narcotics come from two main cannabis plants. These are the Cannabis Indica and the Cannabis Sativa. Previously, the Indica plant contained both tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabis Sativa was rich in THC. But because plants are being bred nowadays, we can no longer assume this. Hashish and weed, therefore, contain THC and CBD. THC provides a ‘stoned’ or ‘high’ effect. CBD does not have this result, it even makes THC less effective.

Cannabidiol & Cannabidiol Oil

Cannabidiol (CBD) comes from the industrial hemp plant: this cannabis variant contains less than 0.2 percent of THC. How does it arise? The flowers of the plant are extracted and then a raw paste with a high content of cannabidiol remains. The paste is further purified to isolate CBD. Pure cannabidiol is safe and can also be added to cosmetics. You can find it under the name of the same name on the INCI list.

CBD oil contains less than 0.05 percent of THC. It is made from the raw paste, to which vegetable oil (olive oil, hemp seed oil, chef’s oil) is added. This paste also contains all the other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. This CBD oil may only be used as a dietary supplement and not in, for example, cosmetics. For a product consumed, the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS) has indicated that a percentage of 0.05 THC is acceptable.

Iris Freie of the Cannabinoid Consultancy Netherlands (CAN): “Five years ago, the CAN started a lobby in The Hague to clarify the legal status of CBD oil. CBD oil officially falls under the Opium Act, because it is made from hemp and there is naturally a small amount of THC in it. Agreements have now been made about this that are expected to be reflected in the legislation in 2020.”

First official quality mark for CBD products in Europe (since January 2020)

CAN did have a goal. And that was achieved at the beginning of this year: the launch of a European Quality Mark. “In almost every drugstore and health food store there are all kinds of products that contain CBD: from dietary supplements, such as CBD oil and capsules, to cosmetics. The latest data reports that there are between 40 and 45 million daily users of CBD products in Europe alone. A large number of producers market these products.

This concerns well-known suppliers with trusted products as well as many new players on the market. You might expect that policies have been developed at both national and international levels to manage the enormous popularity of CBD products. However, this is by no means the case, which means that all kinds of unnecessary uncertainties remain with regard to the assurance of the quality of CBD products. This prompted the CAN to develop a Quality Mark. The CAN Quality Mark ensures that the quality of the end product meets our industry standard, based on EU guidelines for food supplements and that it is fully traceable up to the seed.

The data of each product is made transparent to the consumer via a separate website. With the quality mark and quality assurance of CBD products, we want to show consumers, government, and healthcare providers that CBD products can be of good and reliable quality.”

Scientific research

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology published an article in early 2019, which investigated why cannabidiol receives so much attention as a cosmetic product. According to the researchers, it is a popular ingredient in skincare products, because it has a moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and wrinkle-reducing effect. It would also help with acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Still, the researchers warn that the data is too limited in terms of efficacy to really assess it properly. Various studies show that cannabidiol has a skin-protecting and anti-inflammatory effect. But the studies on cannabidiol are quite premature and more research needs to be done.

Wrong views about Hemp Seed Oil

There is also Hemp Seed Oil. This could be associated with THC and CBD, but nothing could be further from the truth. Hemp seed oil is pressed from hemp seeds. Hemp seed is a superfood because it contains a high content of good nutrients. Hemp seed oil is a calming, moisturizing, and nourishing oil. It is rich in essential fatty acids (linolenic acid and linoleic acid) and the antioxidants vitamins A and E. In addition, it contains iron and magnesium. Hemp seed oil does not contain CBD or THC. So there is nothing dangerous about it and it is freely available. You can add it to dressings, salads, sauces, and smoothies. You will also find it in care products such as creams, soap, and body lotion. Hemp seed oil nourishes the skin, retains moisture, and counteracts skin inflammation. On the INCI list, it is listed as Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil.
